1949 - WHAT is not PROLOGUE is not PESTILENT
For his 1949 rookie cpaign, Rolfe inherited a 78-76 te. He had learned from the managers he’d played for and as a Yankee player, he’d come to appreciate that franchise’s great strengths that had lead to their success: Pitching & Power. The 1948 Bengals had had league average pitching and were out-homered in a homer-ping home park, 78-92. The te went 37-51 against tes with over .500 records and all three of them had significantly better home run capabilities than the roster he’d inherited. So this rigorous analyst knew where the te needed attention: the two attributes he was looking for, pitching and power, and his own passion, crisp fundental execution — the little things.

Ownership didn’t provide him with a ton of new material to attack the obvious power ceiling imposed by zero offense out of the 1st base position (there was 23-year-old George Vico– OPS+ of 88, and 30-year old Paul Cpbell — OPS+ of 60 to share the duties). In 1949, they decided to start the season with those two, not exactly attacking the limiting factor. That factor was exacerbated because the te’s second-best slugger, outfielder Dick Wakefield, was fundentally-weak and seen as a lazy dilettante.

But even then, aviation security experts said, fire would not have spread through the pressurized pipelines that bring fuel out to airplanes parked at gates.

“The probability that an explosion would travel through the pipeline and destroy targets along the tarmac is almost nil,” said Ron, now president of New Age Security Solutions in Rockville, Md. “The exception would be pipelines that are not in use and contain vapor.”

Jet fuel is similar to kerosene and, unlike gasoline, requires very high temperatures to burn. Unless it is in vapor or mist form — which can occur in a plane crash — jet fuel does not explode. Additives raise the flashpoint of jet fuel, further reducing the likelihood that it will burn, experts said.

Got that? The LAT is essentially saying that the thwarting of this plot really is no big deal, because if the terrorists had had a chance to carry it off, the damage would have been “limited.”

The invitations have been sent, I finally finished writing my vows, and the honeymoon suite is booked. Now we have to buy our rings and my mom and I have 80 cupcakes to make! On Monday, Kevin and I met with our pastor to go over the details of wedding. It was so much fun to talk through the ceremony and make such definite plans. Sure, it’s two weeks away, but I’m thinking maybe it hasn’t sunk in yet! It’s hard to believe that, after such a rotten six years, life is tasting so sweet.
You see, this story is good news for the Bush administration and the war on terror, so the LAT has to spin it as yawn-worthy in response.

Tonight’s Democratic candidates presidential debate (UPDATE II)

It will take place at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire and starts at 7pm ET. I had originally planned on liveblogging it, but am not so sure I will as I really don’t want to ruin what’s left of my weekend The WaPo has a write-up on the debate
